Heart of the Valley Animal Shelter has a new a dental program for their animals.
A program that folks donated up to $20,000 to help start.
The first procedure was Wednesday morning.
The pets aren’t looking for pearly whites, but they are hoping to stop the pain in their teeth.
“It’s really enjoyable for me to be able to do this,” said Tony Woodward, a veterinary dentist. “What it’s all about is making these pets feel better and the problem with dental disease is the pets don’t show any obvious pain. And when you fix them and take care of that pain, they’re more adaptable. People don’t have to have a big vet bill right after adopting and there is a lot less chance of the patients being returned.”
“Dental disease is extremely painful,” said Kari Chiocchi, who works at The Heart of the Valley. “(We had) Two cats named Poi and the other is Kobe – both of these cats came in and they were easily irritable when you’d be handling them. When you’d go in to say hi to them they would be hissing at you and pretty angry and after the dental procedures and once we got their teeth cleaned they became totally new cats.”
After these animals have the dental surgery that they need, their mood will improve and they will become more pleasant to be around.
