Mouth Ulcer Treatment
Mouth ulcers are small sores, which develop in the mouth, usually inside the cheeks. Ulcers are not usually harmful, but they can be painful, especially if you catch them when you are eating or brushing your teeth.
Mouth ulcers aren’t infectious and typically disappear within one to about fourteen days. Nonetheless, assuming you get a blister that is enormous or incredibly difficult, or on the other hand assuming that it goes on for quite a while without mending, you should look for the counsel of a specialist.
Ulcers are painful sores that appear inside the mouth. They are usually red or yellow. They are different from cold sores, which appear on the outer lips and are caused by a virus.
There are many things that cause mouth ulcers. The most common cause is injury (such as accidentally biting the inside of your cheek). Other causes include aphthous ulceration, certain medications, skin rashes in the mouth, viral, bacterial, and fungal infections, chemicals, and some medical conditions
Symptoms of mouth ulcers
Mouth ulcers are oval-shaped sores, which tend to be sore; they are usually either grey or yellow and they may be surrounded by slightly inflamed tissue. Mouth ulcers usually develop inside the cheeks, but they can also be found on the inside of the lip, underneath the tongue and on the bottom of the mouth.
In many cases, mouth ulcers do not require any treatment, but you should seek medical help if the ulcer gets worse, it is very painful or you have it for more than 2 weeks.
Causes for Mouth Ulcers
Traumatic ulcer – Traumatic injuries of the oral mucosa are quite common. They are caused by mechanical damage (contact with sharp foodstuff; accidental biting during mastication etc) and thermal, electrical, or chemical burns.
Aphthous ulcer – The most common type of oral ulcer which occurs in otherwise healthy individuals. Lesions appear single or multiple and are associated with severe pain, The exact cause is not known. It is considered to be multi factorial including autoimmunity, hereditary and environmental factors like trauma, nutrition deficiency (iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12), and stress.
Herpetic gingivostomatitis – Pin-headed fluid-filled lesions that readily rupture and give rise to painful ulcers covered by a yellowish pseudomembrane. These ulcers are caused by a type of virus called Herpes simplex Virus.
Herpes zoster infection – Herpes zoster infection is the reactivation of Varicella Zoster Virus. Lesions are painful, clustered ulcers of 1–5 mm in diameter that appear on the hard palate or buccal gingivae only on one side.
Herpangina – The condition presents as multiple ulcers of the oropharynx, soft palate, and tonsillar pillars. Children under 10 years of age are usually affected, and outbreaks occur in epidemics in the summer. The Coxsackie virus is the causative organism.
Erythema multiforme – It is a muco-cutaneous hypersensitivity reaction to different factors like drugs and infections. Certain medications such as penicillin, cephalosporins, analgesics, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or several infections (herpes simplex virus, Epstein-Barr Virus, Cytomegalovirus, Varicella Zoster Virus, fungal agents, and parasites) can trigger these type of ulcerations.
As mentioned above, there are numerous types or causes for oral ulcers. Management will thus include identification of the type / cause for ulcer by thorough history and oral examination. Some cases may need biopsy and histopathological examination for diagnosis. The management varies according to the type of oral ulcer
